Rocky Raccoon is still lurking around our house. We’ve long removed the food source, but somehow it has now decided to come back and that our place is a good spot to nap during the day. Last night, as we were getting ready to head out to our weekly Sunday evening ice cream, spouse-man heard the skreetchity skratchity happening in the eave. He took the broom handle and did a couple of hard knocks up there and heard the critter skitter along. We got out the lavender baby powder and did the track preparation outside the garage door – again … left the door ajar and headed off for the fat-fest.
Not gone 35 minutes, we pull into the driveway and Maya, the oldest pooch, excitedly runs out to meet us. Now, on a farm that’s cool – however living on a fairly busy corner in the burbs it is rather alarming to have a loose dog, especially one who is agitated. Where’s the pup?, we hurriedly get out of the car asking out loud, wondering about the yearling, Izzi, who is even less streetwise than Maya - the completely unstreetwise. One of my greatest fears is to come home and find a crumpled heap of fur on the side of the road belonging to us. We have a wrought iron gate that we have attached a metal screen to in order that the pooches don’t crawl out of the rather large decorative gate holes. The gate was closed, but the screen was a mangled mess – signs of some pretty exciting activity happening right next to the gate area. We check the powder and sure enough little ‘coon feet prints are present. Now here’s the interesting part: there are either two raccoons, or one went out twice AND managed to go out with a couple of wet feet. How did it get wet on the inside when the sprinkler ran outside? Why is it NOT dry yet??? Both dogs are panting heavily from all the excitement as if they just ran 5 miles. It appears that we have just missed a ‘coon sighting on our front step. If it wasn’t for that long line at the ice cream shop….
Stay tuned…or not…for ‘coon updates. By the way, Izzi was a good pup and was still in the yard.
Good for Izzi! I bet the pups were quite excited. I hope the coon-sightings diminish. I wonder what it is that's attracting the little critter, right there in the 'burbs?
