Michael W. Smith was in town last night for a concert. Being a toddler at this Contemporary Christian Music stuff (just because K-Love plays it, doesn't mean I like it, which usually means I won't listen), I couldn't have named one song that I knew he did. However, I found myself happily singing along to many, including Stand, his newest, that NHCC's fine musicians have introduced us to so well. He was accompanied by a talented violinist named Christa Black, a tall, dark haired beauty who managed to sing at the same time she was playing - that's a feat - as well as a two other talented musicians (Michael Olson, Jim Daneker).
There were two people directly behind me who had no fear in singing out - I'm thinkin' they sing in something other than a typical Sunday church service - and it was a sort of stereo-squared effect. Also, the crew did something cool with the lighting so that the violinist was projected on both side walls as a giant violining silhouette. We got a teaser of his Christmas album - which I will buying sight unseen, especially since he mentioned the London Philharmonic will be chipping in. Still a sucker for live, right-there-in-front-of-you music, I wish I could get a good dose of this daily. It fills my chest and makes me smile. So for all of you in the know for however many decades Mr. Smith has been around, I am a newbie.
He is truly an amazing artist, isn't he? I think I mentioned that one of the things I liked about Dave Powers was his ability to bring you right into the Throne Room with worship. Michael W.? Same talent, for sure! One of the best concerts I've ever attended was Michael and Third Day. It was awesome. Glad you enjoyed this one. Other suggestions if you liked him - Mercy Me, Matt Redman, and Jeremy Camp.
